On June 28-29, 2013 in Medan, Indonesia, the 37th meeting of APEC Intellectual Property Rights Experts’ Group (IPEG) took place within the 3rd Senior Officials Meeting and related meetings. The representatives of Rospatent and Russian APEC Study Center took part in the meeting.
Information of APEC Secretariat on APEC current activities, including projects, were presented during the meeting.
IPEG members exchanged the information on current amendments to national legislation of APEC economies and discussed certain aspects of IP protection, use and enforcement.
APEC economies made update on implementation of number of APEC initiatives and projects. In particular, the information on completion of APEC project CTI 23 2011T “Training for Trainers on Intellectual Property Issues: Management and Commercialization” initiated by Rospatent in 2011 was presented to APEC economies. The Final Report of the project was published in March 2013 on APEC web-site. IPEG members emphasized the importance of projects focused on IP management and commercialization issues and expressed their hope in continuation of such projects in the future.
Also, a number of new initiatives and projects were presented for IPEG members consideration. The representative of Rospatent presented Concept Note “Promoting Effective Utilization of IPRs through the Concept of Open Innovations”. The project aims at exchange information and experience among APEC economies. The suggested project provides for conduction of a study on various national approaches to the concept of open innovations, conduction of conference/seminar on open innovations and development of guidelines on use of open innovation models for building up innovation-based economy. Co-sponsors of the project are Korea and Mexico. The Concept Note was endorsed by IPEG. The project will be considered by other APEC fora intersessionally.
The next 38th IPEG meeting will be held in 2014 in China.
